Orville Myers has been shooting for The Monterey County Herald since 1980 and has covered quite a few airshows. At the California International Airshow, Myers captured a “photo of a lifetime” of the Navy’s newest and most advanced jet, the Super Hornet, flying close to 700 miles per hour.

“It was great weather for the show with clear skies and lots of spectators,” Myers said. “As the F-18 made a wide circle around the airport, the
announcer said that the pilot would bring the jet to a point just before breaking the sound barrier. I shot a series of about 15 frames as the cloud gradually built up around the jet. I had never seen anything quite so amazing.”
